Guides, protocols & papers
Curated references for bead-beating and bead selection, to help you choose the right bead size and material and to optimize your homogenization protocols.
Research notes
Monthly article series on homogenization methods
Each month we review recent published work on one homogenization approach: tissue, cells, microbial communities, cryogenic grinding and the media themselves. Every article cites its sources so you can go to the primary literature.
- How bead-beating intensity shapes your microbiome resultsLysis intensity is not a neutral setting. Published comparisons show it changes which taxa you recover, which means it changes your conclusions.
Publication schedule

Bead-selection guides
Manufacturer guidelines (such as Macherey-Nagel’s) explain how to match bead diameter to sample: small beads for bacteria and yeast, larger beads for plant and animal tissue. For the media itself, see LabTIE’s grinding media range.
Protocol references
Application notes from homogenizer vendors, for example Revvity/Omni protocols and the Qiagen TissueLyser handbook, detail speeds, times, and bead volumes for dispensing into 96 tubes or plates. Parameters vary with sample mass and device.
Academic papers
Peer-reviewed work confirms the impact of bead choice on yield. One frequently cited result found 0.1 mm beads gave over 12× more DNA than 2.8 mm beads for gut samples, with a 0.1 mm + 0.5 mm combination optimal for yeast. That is the basis for the bead-selection guidance across this site.
LabTIE documentation
LabTIE’s product documentation covers manuals and FAQs for its dispensers and grinding media. Explore the product pages, the bead dispensers line, and the knowledge base for application notes.
